Using funds secured by the City from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association), the City of Winfield constructed a weather-related shelter near City Hall.
The†new shelter was engineered and constructed to withstand winds of up to 250 MPH. The facility can house up to 500 people in a tornado-related event (short-term) and up to 250 people for long-term weather events, such as hurricanes. It also has an area for a command center to be set up for city services, such as fire and police, should their buildings be damaged or destroyed in a storm. The shelter was completed and inspected in early June, 2009 and stands ready to protect Winfield residents should the need arise.
