Connecting Families Project

The Winfield Public Library is hosting the Connecting Families Project – Connecting Alabama Military Men and Women with their families via the internet.  It is one of more than a hundred Alabama libraries chosen to take part in “The Connecting Families Project” This project was created through the combined efforts of Governor Bob Riley, the Alabama State Library, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Its goal is to provide computers with broadband capabilities to Alabama public libraries so that military families will be able to talk with their service men and women away from home.

Skype ComputerThe Winfield library owns a public use Apple computer which has both a microphone and a webcam. The Apple computer is also equipped with a Skype software program which makes it possible for users to talk and see each other for free.  Family members will need to call 205-487-2484 or come by the library for more information and to arrange an appointment.

2009 Summer Reading

"Be creative at your library"

Summer ReadingThe 2009 Summer Reading was a great program with lots of kids, parents, and grandparents participating.  The Summer Reading program only lasted through the month of June so if you missed the fun then you MUST join us in June 2010!

The Mobile Dairy Classroom is just one example of the entertaining and exciting programs where kids can have a first-hand learning experience.  The morning of June 9th began with the reading of the book, I Am A Rainbow by Dolly Parton.  Then everyone went outside for the main event.

June was the National Dairy Awareness month so Amanda Griffith with the Alabama Dairy Farmers brought Lucille the cow for everyone to meet. Lucille is a real dairy cow who weighs approximately 850 pounds.  Ms Griffith gave an informative talk about the different types of dairy cows, how they produce milk, and the nutritional benefits of milk.  The kids had a great time helping hook up Lucille to the milking machine and learning about what happens to the milk after it come from the cow until it arrives on their tables at home. At the conclusion everyone enjoyed a delicious ice cream treat!  Click here to view the fun.
